Outwest guns, welcome to the forum. Savage starting using a letter as a prefix in the serial numbers in 1969, so if your Dad bought it in the late 70's it was either used or new old stock. They still pop up on occassion NIB. The date of manufacture for your rifle would be either 1967 or 1968. Mad Dog should have enough numbers in that range to give you the exact year. Also on the front of the lever attachment to the receiver you should see a small oval with a number followed by a letter. U = 1967 V = 1968.

On top of the barrel just ahead of the rear sight, it's marked as to what it is, and the caliber, plus it says Series A.
